A significant oil spill response agreement for the sea areas covering the southern Atlantic has been made with EMSA, the European Union’s Maritime and Safety Agency. This significant agreement made with EMSA includes the establishment of a new oil spill response center on the Atlantic coast in Sines, Portugal. The value of the agreement that EMSA ratified on Friday is 3.4 million euros, with an additional option for three more years.
According to the contract, Clean Globe International establishes an oil spill response center in Portugal similar to the ones that have been founded in Finland and Denmark in 2005. The center is to be ready by spring 2007. The Portuguese tanker MT Galp Marine will be outfitted for oil spill response and the crew and the personnel of the oil spill response center in Sines Portugal will be trained in oil spill response. MT Galp Marine that traffics along the Portuguese coast can be outfitted for oil spill response within 15 hours.
Portuguese coast can be outfitted for oil spill response in 15 hours.
- Our oil spill response center concept is, according to EMSA, clearly the most functional and most advanced solution for improving the oil spill response preparedness on European waters. The equipment and staff of the oil spill response center in Portugal can also be used by EMSA or any of its member states in the Baltic Sea and respectively the oil spill response centers in the Baltic region can take part in oil spill response operations in the Atlantic. This agreement improves the oil spill response readiness and capacity on both sea areas, said Lasse Parvinen, CEO of Clean Globe International. CGI also has a contract for the Baltic Sea comprising the conversion of five oil tankers for oil spill response with in 24 hours.
- We aim to influence the European legislation so that all new tankers that traffic along the coasts should be equipped with pre-fittings for oil spill response equipment already at the construction stage. When needed, the vessels could then quickly be converted to recover oil at sea. Our model for oil spill response centers is clearly the most cost-effective solution for oil spill response at sea all over the world, said Parvinen.
Through EMSA, the European Union strives to improve oil spill response preparedness in the European sea and coastal areas, covering with the existing contracts the Baltic Sea, the Atlantic Coast and the Mediterranean. Clean Globe International will also participate in EMSA’s tenders for oil spill response centers when the European Union in 2007 expands to the Black Sea and the Aegean.
